The Emmarentia Post: April 2010

Hi All. We have come to the end of another year at ERA and our AGM will be held at 19h00 in the Colonial Room at Marks Park on 5 May 2010.

In this month’s article I would like to thank the members of the committee for all their hard work and input to make ERA the success that it is.

Mrs. Anne Askew was the previous chair of ERA and now holds the communication portfolio. She also sits on various sub-committees one of which is the Botanical Gardens committee. Anne is to be thanked for her endless energy and efforts in ensuring, amongst other things, that what ERA does is distributed to our residents by way of the news letter of which she is the editor.

Mrs. Gemey Abrahams is ERA’s Town Planning expert and through her efforts Emmarentia retains the tranquillity and green aesthetic which make our suburb the green heart of Johannesburg. Her tireless efforts in ensuring that the building regulations are adhered to and that all plans are authorised ensures further that there is no transgression of the city’s Bi-laws when building renovations and alterations are made.

Ms. Joan Gardner, who shares the Heritage portfolio with Mr. Yousuf Eshak, for her contribution, research and work on the heritage issues that are constantly occurring in a suburb of this age. Mr. Eshak is well versed in the historical aspects of the suburb as a whole and also sits on various other heritage committees. His and Joan’s input are valuable source of information that enables our committee to make fair heritage decisions on houses that have reached that period of their existence.

Mr. John Cartwright holds the Green Space and Graffiti portfolio. It is through his efforts and generous donations to the committee that we have out signs printed and our news letters published. Mr. Cartwright also sits on the Botanical Gardens committee with Anne who are our liaison with City Parks.

Mr. Dick Pyke holds the infrastructure portfolio and deals with all the problems arising with the infrastructure in Emmarentia. He goes out of his way to ensure that all our complaints reach the right ears and the powers that be.

Mr. Michael Michaels our Finance and Membership portfolio holder. Mike ensures that our finances run smoothly and that ERA spends our income on projects that help the community.

Last, but not least, to Councillor Pat Richards, who makes every effort to attend our monthly committee meetings so that she may be kept abreast of our communities issues and who is our mouthpiece at the City Council.

My, and the committee’s, thanks also go to Mr. Tony Cross who held the portfolio of deputy chair but who has now resigned, for his efforts on the committee during his time in office.

Our thanks also go out to the non-members of our committee who contribute so much to making our suburb safe, they are all the members of Colonel Moodley’s team stationed at the Parkview Police Station.

ERA Chair Costa Vranas

P.S. (from the editor) A huge “Thank You” to Costa Vranas for chairing the ERA committee this past year. His commitment, passion and energy have been formidable. He is truly committed in making Emmarentia a safer and nicer place to live.
